Epic Poems

The epic is poetry at its grandest scale — a long narrative poem that tells the story of a hero's journey through extraordinary challenges. From Homer's Odyssey to Milton's Paradise Lost, epics grapple with the biggest questions of human existence: destiny, duty, mortality, and the nature of good and evil.

Structure & Rules

Long narrative form, traditionally in dactylic hexameter (Greek/Latin) or blank verse (English). Features an invocation of the muse, in medias res opening, extended similes, catalogs, and a hero who embodies cultural values.

How to Write a Epic

Epic poetry is one of the most ambitious forms. Choose a larger-than-life subject. Begin in the middle of the action. Use elevated, formal language. Include supernatural elements or divine intervention. Modern epics can adapt these conventions to contemporary subjects.
