The Hat on the Front Pew
Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.
Aunt Louise places your church hat
on the front pew,
wide brim tilted toward the pulpit
as if you stepped out
only to greet somebody.
No one sits beside it.
During the prayer,
one white feather trembles
in the vent's soft air.
After the benediction,
Aunt Louise lifts the hat
with both hands,
and the whole row rises
to let memory pass.
