Birthday Without Candles
Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.
We mark the day quietly.
No candles.
No wish forced through smoke.
I make the cake you never tasted,
write your name where icing
will not last.
People ask how old.
I say the number you would be.
Grammar cannot decide
between are and were.
Love uses both.
