His Chair Between Us

by The Quiet Voice

Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.

His chair remains at the table because moving it feels like a decision. I sit beside it as his wife. Our son sits across from it and remembers being taught to shuffle cards. Our daughter touches the worn arm where he waited through homework. Nobody owns the empty place. We pass the bread around it, letting husband, father, and friend remain larger than one name.
