The Voice Message I Saved

by The Night Voice

Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.

You called about nothing: the bus was late, your soup had spilled, you might come Sunday. I saved the message by accident. Now the phone asks every month if I still need it. I press keep. Not because these twelve seconds contain all of you, but because your voice still expects an answer, and for a moment I remember how it felt to owe you one.
