Because the Bus Was Late

by The Hearth Voice

Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.

Because the bus was late, I watched an old man split an orange and give the brighter half across the bench. Because the bus was late, a child counted red cars, a nurse untied her shoes, two strangers shared the weather. Because the bus was late, my hurry lost its argument. The city, briefly visible, kept arriving without me.
