Nurse at Four A.M.
Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.
At four the corridor lights
make no promise of morning.
A nurse checks the name band,
warms the blanket,
and explains the next sound
before the machine makes it.
In another room,
someone presses the call button twice.
She answers without calling fear foolish.
The shift is skill repeated:
attention,
record,
handoff,
return.
