The Light in Her Kitchen

by The Hearth Voice

Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.

Her kitchen light stayed on until every child was home. Even after we had keys, partners, cities of our own, it burned in the mind's window— a square no distance darkened. Now my house has such a light. I understand its cost: not electricity, but listening for the gate, learning every engine in the street.
