The Spare Key Returned

by The Hearth Voice

Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.

On moving day you place my spare key on the kitchen counter. For six years it meant: come in, water the plant, wait here if the rain starts. Now the new tenant will change the lock. We both understand. I slide the key back toward you. Keep it, I say. Not because it opens anything, but because once it did, and that is worth carrying.
