The Story the Children Ask
Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.
Tell us how you met him,
the children ask again.
So I begin before they existed:
a late bus,
a borrowed umbrella,
his terrible first joke.
They interrupt with corrections
learned from their father.
For ten minutes,
my husband returns through the story
and their father returns through mine.
We do not pretend he is present.
We practice keeping his whole life near.
