After the Parade

by The Quiet Voice

Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.

After the parade, flags return to cupboards, chairs fold into trucks, the brass band loosens its collars. A veteran waits at the crossing for traffic to resume. No music follows him home. Remembrance begins again where ceremony ends, in the ordinary care we owe the living.
