The Paper Cap Is Too Large
Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.
The paper graduation cap
slides over one eyebrow.
She has learned seventeen letters,
most of the days of the week,
and exactly where the blue crayons hide.
Her teacher calls her name.
She crosses the rug,
accepts a certificate with both hands,
and waves at every family by mistake.
Next year waits one hallway away.
Today the room applauds.
