Chairs Before Sunday Service
Original EveryPoem Studio house-voice poem.
Before the first hymn,
we carry chairs from the hall.
One leg wobbles.
Someone finds folded paper
and steadies it without comment.
A child places pencils
beside the prayer cards.
The kettle begins in the kitchen.
Church starts before worship:
in lifted weight,
in room made wider,
in the quiet work
that expects more people.
